The cottage

Hepple Hill Cottage started life as a tiny cottage in the 19th century and over the years has grown into an unusual ‘upside down’ house with amazing views of Edmundbyers Common. Bird watchers will be in their element: buzzards, red kites and a barn owl are recent sightings from the first floor kitchen window.
Situated on the edge of Edmundbyres village in the North Pennines, Hepple Hill looks out over the dramatic landscape of Edmundbyres Common. It is within walking distance of Derwent Reservoir and also only a minute’s stroll from two pubs.

Hepple Hill is a three bedroomed cottage with gardens front and back and ample parking for three cars.
The master bedroom is next to the welcoming entrance hall on the ground floor. It has an en-suite shower room and french doors leading directly to the back garden – the perfect spot for a morning cup of tea or breakfast in bed.
Stairs take you up to the kitchen which has floor to ceiling windows running the whole width of the room. A unique dining table, handcrafted from a local ash tree, comfortably seats six and is an excellent vantage point for taking in the views. You can listen to your favourite music or podcasts on the Alexa Echo Show. The kitchen is well equipped with a new Stoves cooker and a new dishwasher. Granite and wood work surfaces provide plenty of room for food preparation and you will find everything you need whether it’s making a snack, cooking a Sunday lunch or even baking.
Tucked next to the kitchen at the top of the stairs is a cosy office space.
In the adjoining lounge is a multi-fuel stove, plenty of comfortable seating, a smart TV (WIFI is provided), and more lovely views from the cottage windows.
A second staircase leads down to the two remaining bedrooms and family bathroom. The double bedroom has direct access to the front garden and has its own patio. The other bedroom is a twin with a three quarter bed and a single. All the bedrooms have quality bedding, bath robes and a generous supply of towels.
There is a handy laundry room with washing machine, clothes airer, iron and ironing board and a freezer. We also provide a travel cot, safety gate for one set of stairs (the other one can be protected by closing a door) and a high chair for babies up to six months old.
Gardens to the front and back of Hepple Hill provide plenty of sitting areas to relax, enjoy a picnic lunch or barbeque. Park directly next to the cottage on the drive. There is plenty of further parking by the front gate.
hepple
Why Is it called Hepple Hill?
from Hepple in Rothbury (Northumb) which is recorded as Hyephal in 1229 and Hephale in 125
The place-name derives from Old English hēope ‘rose hip’ or hēopa ‘dog rose bramble’ + halh ‘nook corner of land’
cottage summary

The cottage sleeps up to 6 guests in 3 bedrooms, with 2 bathrooms. Please note we do not allow dogs in the cottage.
The cottage is surrounded by farmland – our neighbours at Hepple Hill Farm are the main farmers in the area – and countryside noises are part of life here. Please feel free to chase the hens out of the garden – they are not ours! If you are lucky, you may find some eggs. It is also advisable to keep the gate to the drive closed as sheep have been known to wander in.
